She’s an icon, she’s a legend. What is Asian representation in Hollywood? That’s the question the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles was faced with when it decided to host the film series “Beyond the Icon: Anna May Wong.”
From now until Nov. 27, the museum is honoring Anna May Wong — Gemma Chan’s iconic style influence at the Met Gala earlier this year — as the first Chinese American star in Hollywood. The series will feature some of Wong’s greatest works such as “The Toll of the Sea,” in which she landed her first lead role. The film will be shown on Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
We can’t have good things apparently, SMH. Matt Schlapp, the president of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), took to Twitter on Monday to criticize PBS and “Sesame Street” for introducing Ji-young, a 7-year-old Korean American Muppet.
What race is Ernie is Bert? You are insane PBS and we should stop funding you."Sesame Street" is welcoming its first ever Asian American muppet. Ji-Young is 7, Korean American and loves to rock out on her guitar. The hope is that she will be a positive force against a rise in anti-Asian hate. https://t.co/k6Qwu2F9NtThe Associated Press @APMany social media users quickly called out Schlapp’s comment about a puppet on a children’s TV show. Another user also shared screenshots of Schlapp’s past social media posts in which he echoed the same anti-Asian remarks Trump used in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Look where the train’s headed next. The Hollywood remake of the critically acclaimed 2016 South Korean zombie film “Train to Busan” will reportedly be named “Last Train to New York.”
Described as the godfather of modern horror, Australian filmmaker James Wan, who masterminded cult hits like “Saw” (2004), “Insidious” (2010) and “The Conjuring” Universe, will join as producer and screenplay writer. Alongside him will be American filmmaker and “It” screenwriter Gary Dauberman, who previously worked with Wan on the 2017 horror flick. Dauberman made enriching contributions as a screenwriter to “Annabelle: Creation” (2017) and “The Nun” (2018) before making his directorial debut with “Annabelle Comes Home” in 2019.
