🏆 The Headlines
‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Spinoff About Astrid & Charlie Romance In Early Works At Warner Bros — Emmy nominated Barry producer and scribe Jason Kim is set to pen a spinoff of Crazy Rich Asians which will center around the Gemma Chan character of Astrid Young Teo and her romance with Charlie Wu, played by Harry Shum Jr. in the original movie.
Note, the Crazy Rich Asians sequel remains in development, and it’s being penned by Amy Wang. Both the spin-off and Crazy Rich Asians sequel will be tied to Kevin Kwan’s second book in the trilogy, China Rich Girlfriend. That book, in addition to covering Astrid and Charlie’s relationship, follows the Constance Wu and Henry Golding characters, Rachel and Nick, on a trip to Shanghai to find the former’s birth father.
Astrid is the newly single cousin of Nick Young (Henry Golding’s character), and in the Kwan books, Charlie Wu is her first love. They were previously engaged, but Astrid’s parents broke them up as they didn’t see Charlie as a suitable husband. Astrid is known for great beauty and impeccable fashion sense.
In the Jon M. Chu directed movie, Astrid learns that her husband Michael (Pierre Png) has been seeing a mistress. She reconnects with Charlie after they run into each other at Nick and Rachel’s engagement party.
Oklahoma K-pop star AleXa crowned the winner of inaugural ‘American Song Contest’ — K-pop idol AleXa is the first crowned winner of the “Eurovision”-inspired competition show “American Song Contest,” co-hosted by Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg.
“I’m just saying right now in American media, I hope to be, I guess, a role model eventually for somebody,” AleXa said.
The show’s 56 contestants each submitted an original song to represent a U.S. state, district or territory in a competition for the title of America’s Best Song. The grand finals narrowed the competition down to 10 competitors, whose votes were tallied in a fashion similar to “Eurovision.” Points from the 56-member professional jury were divided across 10 sections of the U.S. Designated representatives announced on air which contestants received max scores of 12 points, while other points from 10 down to 1 were also given on-screen.
Based on jury points alone, Washington’s Allen Stone initially led with 105 points for his song “A Little Bit of Both,” while AleXa, representing Oklahoma with her song “Wonderland,” sat in fifth place with 60 points.
It was thanks to the public’s votes that AleXa’s overall score skyrocketed, after she received another 656 points for a total of 710. Riker Lynch of Colorado ultimately came in second, despite being in last place based on jury votes, due to a swell of public support that gave him a total of 503 points.
