Why Michelle Yeoh's 'shut up' at the Golden Globes was profound for Asian women — “We have to live with these stereotypes and expectations of being demure and diminutive on the daily. So to witness that on such a big stage of something like the Golden Globes was profound,” said author Catherine Ceniza Choy.

  • Caroline Jeon said she was pleasantly shocked when on Tuesday Michelle Yeoh, who took home the Golden Globe award for best actress, ordered the exit music to stop playing after it interrupted her speech.  

“Shut up, please. I can beat you up, OK? And I’m serious,” Yeoh laughed, before continuing. 

  • Jeon, a 26-year-old Korean American based in New York City, said she’s used to seeing “older white male actors” defiantly run out the clock onstage. Yeoh's moment was refreshing for

    “For her to be confident but also playful about it … it’s reassuring and encouraging and mostly affirming for me to see,” Jeon said.  

  • Yeoh — who during her speech opened up about the racism she witnessed in her early days in Hollywood, as well as the dwindling opportunities for aging actresses — represents Asian women across a spectrum of personalities, said Nadia Kim, professor of sociology and Asian and Asian American studies at Loyola Marymount University. With her use of humor, Yeoh appealed to those who are more reserved by reflecting an elegance, Kim said. She simultaneously represented other Asian women who are more compelled to speak their minds. 

  • Michelle Yeoh won her first Golden Globe on Tuesday for Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy Motion Picture for Everything Everywhere All At Once.

  • Quan won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a motion picture for his winning turn in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” as Waymond, the devoted and daffy partner of Michelle Yeoh’s Evelyn.

  • But he cut his teeth in Hollywood under the tutelage of Spielberg, who cast him in the 1984 blockbuster “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.”

“I was raised to never forget where I came from and to always remember who gave me my first opportunity,” Quan told audience. “I am so happy to see Steven Spielberg here tonight – Steven, thank you!” (Spielberg, beaming, blew Quan a kiss from his seat.)

Quan played Short Round in the Spielberg film, Indy’s sidekick. He felt “so very lucky” to have been cast in the role, he said in his speech, but after the Spielberg film and ’80s classic “The Goonies,” his opportunities soon dried up.

“I started to wonder if that was it,” he said in his speech. “For so many years, I was afraid I had nothing more to offer, that no matter what I did, I would never surpass what I achieved as a kid. Thankfully, more than 30 years later, two guys thought of me. They remembered that kid. And they gave me an opportunity to try again.”

  • Those “two guys” are Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, who co-directed Quan’s comeback film under the moniker “Daniels.” The film, which also received Golden Globe nominations for best picture - musical/comedy and best actress in a musical/comedy for Yeoh, has also earned Oscar buzz.

  • Quan will next be seen in the second season of Marvel series “Loki,” starring alongside Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson.

‘RRR’ Wins Best Song at Golden Globes in Rare Hollywood Awards Triumph for Indian Film Music — The Indian hit turned global phenomenon “RRR” went one for two at the Golden Globes Tuesday night, missing out on best non-English-language picture to “Argentina, 1985” but triumphing for best original song with the viral sensation “Naatu Naatu.”

  • The song entered the race as an underdog, with music superstars Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga and director-songwriter Guillermo del Toro also competing in the category. But awards interest in “RRR” has picked up in recent weeks as the crowd-pleasing action-drama-musical has transcended cult status to earn serious awards attention.

  • The Golden Globe was picked up by composer-songwriter M.M. Keeravani, who thanked his lyricists, arranger, family and director-writer S.S. Rajamouli. The song’s Globes win increases anticipation that “Naatu” will become the rare song by Indian composers to get an Oscar nomination later this month; it already made the Academy’s 15-song shortlist.

  • Backstage at the Globes, Keeravani was clearly processing the latest chapter of “RRR’s” unusual journey through Hollywood. “I feel amused, thrilled, excited,” he said. “I feel I am very grateful to the universe.”

  • Of “Naatu Naatu,” Keervani explained, “it’s a song of celebration. We all wanted to showcase in the song lots of stamina and energy.”

Hollywood’s Progress on Hiring of Female Directors and POC Has Stalled Out, USC Annenberg Report Says — Since 2007, of the 1,600 films surveyed, only 21 movies, or 1.3% were directed by women of color

  • Progress made in gender and ethnic diversity in Hollywood productions that was propelled by #OscarsSoWhite seven years ago is showing signs of stalling out, according to the latest report from the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative.

  • The new report published Monday found that the percentage of filmmakers from underrepresented ethnic groups among the directors of the top 100 highest-grossing films at the box office in 2022 was 20.7%, down from the 15-year high of 27.3% in 2021.

  • For female directors, their share in the top 100 was 9% in 2022, up from the mere 2.7% recorded back in 2007 but down from the 12.7% in 2021. For women of color, the progress is even worse, as only filmmakers from that group only accounted for 2.7% of directors in the top 100 last year. Of the 1,600 films surveyed going back to 2007, only 21 movies, or 1.3% were directed by women of color.

  • But in a recent interview with GQ magazine, the 53-year-old former professional wrestler says he doesn’t care about being a movie star on the level of Dwayne Johnson — one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood.

“I never wanted to be the next Rock,” he told the magazine. “I just want to be a good f---ing actor. A respected actor.” 

  • Bautista, who has worked with a slew of A-list directors including Denis Villeneuve (‘Dune’), Rian Johnson (‘Glass Onion’), Sam Mendes (‘Spectre’) and James Gunn (‘Guardians of the Galaxy’), is careful about the roles that he takes.

  • For him, the most important thing is to get out of his comfort zone and continue improving his craft.

“I’m afraid of things,” Bautista said. “I’m nervous about things. But I can force myself to do things that make me uncomfortable, because I know I’m not gonna get anywhere if I don’t. I may cringe after the fact, but I’m not going to let that fear hold me back.” 

  • In fact, Bautista says he feels “relief” that he will no longer be playing Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s “Guardians” franchise following the series’ upcoming installment, both because of the physical demands of the role and because he wants to work on more serious films

Atsuko Okatsuka on Finding Levity in Scary Situations and Her First Comedy Special: “I See Stand-Up as a Service” — The comic discusses her HBO Max special, 'The Intruder,' as well as the role her “unconventional upbringing” had in discovering her calling.

  • Even when she’s twerking produce into a grocery cart or dropping it like it’s hot, Atsuko Okatsuka has the unique ability to maintain a somewhat innocent sense of whimsy in everything she does. Her primary-colored comedy special, Atsuko Okatsuka: The Intruder, which premiered Dec. 10 on HBO Max, features perhaps the most heartwarming story of family bonding ever told in context of attending Magic Mike Live in Las Vegas.

  • Okatsuka’s family members — most notably her grandmother and her husband, actor Ryan Harper Gray — figure prominently not just in The Intruder (directed by one of the comic’s stand-up idols, Tig Notaro) but also in her robust social media presence, which spawned a worldwide viral sensation earlier this year with #dropchallenge, inadvertently started in January by Okatsuka.

  • The comedian spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about how her “unconventional upbringing” helped shape her sense of humor as well as her motivations behind making people laugh.

    There’s things like, “I’m the second Asian American female stand-up to have a special on HBO, the first being Margaret Cho, and it’s been 22 years, and I’m friends with Margaret now.” The general public [becoming] more aware of stand-up comedy probably has to do with all of the networks producing more specials over the last few years. Then you start seeing more different voices doing stand-up too, and that’s also helped. But also the Internet has really helped: “Well, if the industry is not ready yet, I’ll just talk to my fans immediately from my phone.” That’s really how I was able to get to a place where I was saying, “I’ve been doing stand-up for 13 years, I’m ready to tour.” I just didn’t know if I had the numbers, I didn’t know if I believed that people would show up to see me, and once people started showing me that they would online, that’s when I launched my first tour. I went out on my first tour just last year and it was during the second half of that year that HBO came and saw it. So many things had to happen for me to be even the second Asian American female stand-up on HBO with a special: I had to believe in myself, the industry had to believe in us a little more and unfortunately Instagram had to exist because that’s where I showed my face to people and kept doing jokes on there. So it was the culmination of those things. Where it’s headed? I hope that I do make it easier for the third Asian American to get a special on HBO.

Goonies Cast Pays Tribute to Ke Huy Quan at Unforgettable Gala — Everything Everywhere All at Once took home several awards at the evening, which celebrates AAPI performers.

  • Ke Huy Quan from Everything Everywhere All at Once was a big winner at the 20th annual Unforgettable Gala on Saturday evening in Beverly Hills. The yearly awards show honors Asian Pacific Islander artists and leaders in entertainment and culture. Quan won the best-actor-in-film award for his emotional and action-packed performance as a kind father and husband who ultimately is the heart of Everything Everywhere All at Once. He already has received accolades from the Gotham Awards and the New York Film Critics Circle, and has earned nominations for the Golden Globes and the Film Independent Spirit Awards.

“This is a really special night for me. To be recognized by the AAPI community means the world to me,” Quan told Vanity Fair on the red carpet at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. “For the longest time I wanted a night like this for the AAPI community, to celebrate each other. Honestly, I wouldn’t be here without all of the amazing talent in our community. They have shown me through their own success that there was a way back for me to acting. They are the ones that gave me the courage to dream again, so it means the world to me to be here.”

  • Nearly four decades ago, Quan became famous for his iconic roles in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom as Short Round, and as Data, the gadgeteer, in the 1985 film The Goonies. But, in the 1990s, he was forced to step away from acting when roles were rare for Asian American actors. He went back to school to study film at the University of Southern California and transitioned into working behind the camera and as a stunt coordinator. After spending much of his adult life away from acting, he got a second chance when he landed his role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. After roughly 20 years out of the spotlight, he’s back and being celebrated for giving one of the best performances of the year.

How the American Born Chinese TV series translates the classic graphic novel to screen — Author Gene Luen Yang, show creator Kelvin Yu, and star Ben Wang talk about working with Michelle Yeoh and bringing the Asian-American experience to screen.

  • American Born Chinese is a certified classic graphic novel. A beautifully told story about growing up as the child of immigrants and learning how to fit in America, it is often taught in schools and held up as an example of the artistic heights that comics can reach. Now it's becoming a TV show — and no one is more surprised about that than author Gene Luen Yang. 

    "I'm stunned that people are still reading it," Yang tells EW. "I was actually just in Boston a month ago talking about this book, and in a lot of ways I feel very fortunate for the support that I get from teachers, librarians, and comic book fans. I did not expect this when I first did that book. With the show specifically, I think one of the challenging parts, but it's also one of the most meaningful parts of the show, is thinking through how the conversation about Asian America has changed from the publication of the book until now?"

  • Kelvin Yu, the creator of the American Born Chinese series, has a succinct description of what makes Yang's work (which also includes graphic novels like Dragon Hoops and Superman Smashes the Klan) so rich and long-lasting. 

    "I think Gene's tone, if you read any of his graphic novels, has this great combination of heart, humor and I guess I'll call it medicine," Yu says. "It's like there's something nutritious about what he's saying, and yet it goes down so well and it doesn't take itself too seriously. That just checks every box for me as a TV writer."

Filipino actor Dolly de Leon Dolly snags Best Supporting Performance at LA Film Critics Association Awards — She won the award for her role in Ruben Östlund’s satirical black comedy film “Triangle of Sadness”

  • Filipino actor Dolly de Leon won Best Supporting Performance at this year’s Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards.

  • De Leon, 53, gained international recognition for her role as Abigail in Swedish director Ruben Östlund’s first English-language feature film “Triangle of Sadness.”

  • Both de Leon and Ke Huy Quan of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” tied for the award on Sunday.

  • The satirical black comedy, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 21, stars de Leon along with Harris Dickinson, Charlbi Dean and Woody Harrelson. It follows ultra-rich passengers who find themselves stranded on a desert island after being on a luxury cruise run by a Marxist captain. In the film, de Leon plays Abigail, a toilet manager on the cruise ship who ends up becoming the passengers’ leader.

  • In a video posted last month that has garnered over 332,000 views and 60,000 likes, TikTok user Jasmine (@totallyprincessjasmine) criticizes a clip from the HBO Max series "The Sex Lives of College Girls," which was created and produced by Mindy Kaling. In the clip, Bela, played by Amrit Kaur, talks to her parents about how she used to be an "Indian loser."Donnie Yen almost quit acting after a movie flop left him with only $13 — The international action star made the revelation on Saturday during a speech in Hong Kong.

  • "Mindy Kaling. Just because you are an Indian loser, does not mean Indians are losers," Jasmine says in their video. "At this point you're genuinely doing more harm than good."

  • Stitching Jasmine's video, TikTok user Aqil Dhanani (@aqildhanani) goes on to claim that South Asian comedians are to blame for the promotion of harmful stereotypes in the U.S.

  • HBO’s critically acclaimed series “The White Lotus” could be heading to Asia for its third season, according to director and writer Mike White.

  • White dropped the hint in a featurette at the end of the Season 2 finale, saying the next installment may be “a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality.”

AAPI immigrant representation on TV more than doubled since 2020, study reveals — The number of Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) immigrant characters on TV rose from 12% in 2020 to 27% in 2022, according to a new study by immigrant-focused nonprofit Define American.

  • Characters that portray Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) immigrants on television have more than doubled in the last two years, according to a new study published this week.

  • Define American, a nonprofit focused on humanizing conversations about immigrants, found that AAPI representation jumped from just 12% in 2020 to 28% — becoming consistent with the 27% of U.S. immigrants who are AAPI.

  • AAPI immigrants were the most underrepresented group compared to their real-life counterparts in 2020, the study said. The “substantial increase” is primarily attributed to a general increase in Asian American representation on TV.

  • While the research showed gains for the AAPI and Black communities, it also revealed that Pacific Islander representation is “often erased” in the broader AAPI discourse. Additionally, it found that Latino representation had plummeted from 50% in 2020 to 34% this year.

  • KPOP has announced that it will play its final Broadway performance December 11. The musical opened at Circle in the Square Theatre November 27 following the beginning of previews October 13. While in previews, the show cancelled multiple matinee performances. As of the final performance, the musical will have played 44 previews and 17 performances.

  • The final performance will be dedicated the Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) community. It will be a special event featuring a panel discussion that will celebrate and reflect on AAPI representation on the Broadway stage. Panelists include David Henry Hwang, the first Asian American playwright to win a Tony; KPOP's own Helen Park, the first Asian female composer on Broadway; Korean playwright Hansol Jung; and Pun Bandhu of the Asian American Performers Action Coalition. 200 complimentary tickets are being offered to community members for the performance, which is supported by The Asian American Foundation with Gold House, Asian American Performers Action Coalition, and Ma-Yi Theater Company (which co-produced the premiere of KPOP Off Broadway). 

  • News of the closing is unusually abrupt, and follows public discord between the show's company and New York Times theatre critic Jesse Green, whose negative review was described by KPOP's producers as "casual racism." The show has struggled at the box office throughout its run, both before and after Green's review was published.

Donnie Yen almost quit acting after a movie flop left him with only $13 — The international action star made the revelation on Saturday during a speech in Hong Kong.

  • The 59-year-old martial arts legend, who set up his own film company in the late ‘90s, said that at one point his bank account only had HK$100 (approximately $13) due to a failed movie investment. 

  • “At that time, I only had HK$100 in my bank account, which dealt a big blow to me,” the actor said. “I couldn’t make any money and I was so frustrated. I asked myself if I entered the wrong business and considered quitting. Fortunately, I didn’t leave the industry and persisted in pursuing my dreams.”

  • According to Yen, better opportunities eventually came his way and turned his career around. 

  • He then reminded the aspiring filmmakers in the audience of the importance of studying the course: “No matter how much you enjoy filming, you can’t do it without funds and market demand.”

  • Oscar-winning filmmaker Ang Lee is set to direct a biopic about the late martial arts icon Bruce Lee, and it's shaping up to be a family affair.

  • The Life of Pi director's son Mason Lee (The Hangover Part II, Stand by Me) is attached to play the title role in Bruce Lee, EW has confirmed. The project hails from Sony's 3000 Pictures and is being produced by Ang Lee, Lawrence Grey, Ben Everard, Brian Bell, and Bruce Lee's daughter, Shannon Lee. Dan Futterman, who wrote Foxcatcher and Capote, is working on the latest draft of the script.

  • Bruce Lee, who died in 1973 at 32, was a magnetic international star who helped popularize martial arts on screen with his films, including Fist of Fury, Enter the Dragon, The Way of the Dragon, and The Big Boss.

'Everything Everywhere All at Once' Wins Top Prize at Gotham Awards — Goonies and Indiana Jones alum Ke Huy Quan also won outstanding supporting performance for Everything Everywhere All at Once

    The film won the top prize, best feature, at the 32nd annual Gotham Awards in New York City Monday, and actor Ke Huy Quan won outstanding supporting performance as well. ‘Shang-Chi’ star Simu Liu pushes back on Quentin Tarantino’s anti-Marvel comments —

  • Quentin Tarantino has made it clear that Marvel movies are not his cup of tea, but actor Simu Liu has kindly reminded the director that the films and the studio behind them have provided underrepresented communities a chance to be seen on the big screen unlike ever before.

  • He continued: “No movie studio is or ever will be perfect. But I’m proud to work with one that has made sustained efforts to improve diversity onscreen by creating heroes that empower and inspire people of all communities everywhere. I loved the ‘Golden Age’ too.. but it was white as hell.”

  • Liu seemingly made his comments on social media in response to a podcast interview Tarantino gave in which he criticized the “Marvel-ization of Hollywood.”

  • The films, Tarantino said on the “2 Bears, 1 Cave” podcast, are “the only things that seem to generate any kind of excitement amongst a fanbase or even for the studio making them.”

    He also said that the actors who appear in those films are “not movie stars” because its “franchise characters that become a star.”

Kang has just moved her overall deal from AMC to Amazon and has just now signed on to take over the role of showrunner on Silk: Spider Society, which will be the first in a host of Marvel projects set within Sony Pictures' Spider-Man universe, which features more than 900 characters. The show will be executive produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and will air domestically at first on MGM+, while globally Amazon will stream it via Prime Video.

Quan, who is currently making the awards season press rounds in support of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” revealed the heartwarming tidbit in a new interview with The Guardian.

“He gave me my first job and, so many years later, he has not forgotten me,” Quan said. “Every time I needed help, he’s always there.”

  • Spielberg kept Quan’s child acting career burning bright by landing him his “Indiana Jones” follow-up role in 1985’s “The Goonies,” where Quan played the James Bond-loving Data. Spielberg executive produced the Richard Donner-directed adventure movie.

‘You’d have the white actors tape up their eyes’: James Hong recalls Hollywood racism — With last Friday’s inaugural Celebration of Asian Pacific Cinema & Television fresh in his mind, veteran actor James Hong took the opportunity to look back at how far representation and inclusivity in entertainment have come.

  • The 93-year-old Hollywood veteran, who received the celebration’s Icon Award, recounted his experiences with racism during the beginning of his decades-long acting career.

    “I started in 1953, so at that time, the industry didn’t take us seriously. They just said, ‘Oh, Asians are not qualified to be the top actors,’” Hong told Variety. “You’d have the white actors tape up their eyes.”

  • According to Hong, today’s entertainment landscape stands in stark contrast to that of his youth, and he is in awe of the multiplicity of pathways young Asian creatives can take.

    “And now look where we are. We’re in Hollywood, and there’s people receiving Academy Awards — and even ‘Squid Game,’” said Hong. “So there’s a lot of avenues we can take now.”

  • Many younger awardees reflected his sentiment and expressed that they were glad that their diverse creative voices are finally being recognized and embraced.

    “I think it’s incredible that the Critics Choice Association is putting this on. But there’s also a part of me that’s like, I wish we had this 20 years ago.     “For many, many years people recognized me only as a child [actor] because that was pretty much the last time they saw me up on the screen,” Quan told the magazine. “I’m hoping when people see me now they go, ‘Oh my God! ‘Everything Everywhere,’ All Through Awards Season? — At a screening filled with Oscar voters, Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and the directors marveled at the way their quirky film has struck a chord.

  • You make a movie because you hope people will respond to it, but no one involved with “Everything Everywhere All at Once” expected all of this, the cast and crew kept telling me in the reception area of a luxe Westwood theater on Tuesday night. The “this” in question was a tastemaker party with Oscar voters and industry veterans meant to reposition the indie hit as an awards contender. But the bigger “this,” the one that really boggled them, was the fact that they were embarking on a monthslong awards campaign to begin with.

  • “We did press all through the summer, and then took a break and thought, ‘This will all die down. The feelings will die down, the excitement will die down,’” said Daniel Kwan, who co-directed the film with Daniel Scheinert. “And then we came back and somehow it’s gotten even stronger. At one of the screenings, someone came up to me and said, ‘This is my 14th time watching the movie!’”

  • Passion counts for a lot during awards season, and “Everything Everywhere” has plenty of it: This sci-fi comedy about a Chinese immigrant and laundromat owner (Michelle Yeoh) who becomes the multiverse’s last hope earned stellar reviews in its March release, played for several months in theaters, and made more than $100 million worldwide on a $14.3 million budget. In doing so, it became A24’s highest-grossing title and reinvigorated a specialty-film market that has been ailing since the pandemic began.

  • Though I expect the film will be nominated in several categories at the Oscars, including best picture, it hasn’t taken a traditional path toward that goal. Instead of debuting at a prestigious fall film festival, “Everything Everywhere” chose a raucous spring premiere at South by Southwest, and it was released in theaters on March 25, a time when awards attention was trained exclusively on the Oscar ceremony held that weekend.

  • The film will also have to win over older voters, who may prove more resistant to its wacky charms, since “Everything Everywhere” is laden with sight gags and traffics heavily in down-market genres like sci-fi, action and gross-out comedy. South Indian Cinema Rules as Bollywood Battles Box Office Blues —

  • The Hindi-language Mumbai-based film industry known as Bollywood has been the most visible part of the Indian film industry over the decades but that hegemony appears to be waning.

  • In recent years, the cinema of South India, comprising the Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam language industries, has stolen a march over its hitherto more glamorous Bollywood counterpart in both content and box office.

  • In the 1990s, Mani Ratnam’s Tamil-language films “Roja” (1992) and “Bombay” (1995) were pan-India hits in their Hindi dubbed versions and the filmmaker made a few films in Hindi before returning to his native Tamil. The notion of a pan-India hit, i.e. films made in one of the South Indian languages becoming a hit across India and Indian diaspora markets in Hindi and other language dubbed versions, roared back to life with S.S. Rajamouli’s “Baahubali” films (2015 and 2017), made in Telugu and Tamil, which together grossed $379 million worldwide, with Hindi dubs accounting for a significant chunk ready thirsting over the thought of it on social media.

  • It is during the pandemic years — when Indian audiences in lockdown were exposed to a plethora of non-Bollywood content — that South Indian films soared far beyond Bollywood, as the numbers prove. In 2021, the highest number of Indian films were released in Telugu (204) and Tamil (152) and only 84 films were released in Hindi, according to the annual EY media industry report. The Indian box office recovered post-pandemic to $472 million and South Indian films contributed $290 million of this, three times what Hindi films generated, with the myriad other Indian languages accounting for the rest.

  • 2022 has been a trying year for Bollywood with fancied titles “Laal Singh Chaddha,” “Raksha Bandhan,” “Shamshera,” “Samrat Prithviraj” and “Vikram Vedha,” all featuring A-list talent, underperforming at the box office. Among the top 10 box office hits of 2022 so far, just three, “Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva” at No. 4, “The Kashmir Files” at No. 6 and “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2” at No. 7 are in Hindi. The rest of the top 10 are from South India with the Kannada-language “KGF: Chapter 2,” Telugu-language “RRR” and Tamil-language “Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1” occupying the top three positions.

Jackie Chan reveals he once tried to attack a director with a knife for insulting his mother — In an interview with the Chinese talk show “Shidian Talk,” Jackie Chan revealed that he attempted to attack a director with a knife because he insulted his mother.

  • In an interview with the Chinese talk show “Shidian Talk,” the Hong Kong actor and martial artist spoke about an altercation between him and a director, who he did not name, that had gone too far. 

  • “I was scolded so much, and he even dragged my ancestors in,” Chan said. “So I took a knife and wanted to go and cut the director. I said that he can scold me as much as he wants, but don’t insult my mother.”

  • The 68-year-old began his career as a stuntman in the 1980s before he became a superstar in both Chinese cinema and Hollywood. His early days of performing as a stunt double would only earn him 150 yuan (approximately $21 today).

  • At the time, Chan was working alongside martial arts legend Sammo Hung, who stepped in to stop Chan’s violent outburst. “Sammo grabbed hold of me and said, ‘Are you crazy?’” Chan recalled.

  • Chan also spoke about the criticism he received throughout his career and how it made him feel. “In the past, whenever the newspapers criticized me, I would be unhappy for the day. I would think about it for a day, which became a week, then a year,” Chan said. 

  • However, the superstar has learned to be thankful for the feedback and take criticism in stride. “Don’t take what people say to heart,” he advised.

  • Dubbed Hollywood's first Asian American movie star, Wong championed the need for more representation and less stereotypical roles for Asian Americans on screen. Wong, who died in 1961, struggled to land roles in Hollywood in the early 20th century, a time of "yellowface," when white people wore makeup and clothes to take on Asian roles, and anti-miscegenation laws, which criminalized interracial relationships.

  • The roles she did land were laced with racial stereotypes and she was underpaid, earning $6,000 for her top billed role in Daughter of the Dragon compared to Warner Oland's $12,000, who only appeared in the first 23 minutes of the film. For Shanghai Express, Wong earned $6,000 while Marlene Dietrich made $78,166.

  • After experiencing this racist treatment in Hollywood, Wong moved to Europe and starred in English, French and German films. She told the Los Angeles Times in a 1933 interview that she was tired of the roles she had to play in Hollywood.

  • "Why is it that the screen Chinese is nearly always the villain of the piece, and so cruel a villain — murderous, treacherous, a snake in the grass," she told the newspaper. "We are not like that."

  • Wong's career spanned 60 films — many in the silent era — and she earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.

  • Variety reports that Amy Tan, who wrote the original 1989 novel, has signed on alongside the first screenplay’s co-writer, Ronald Bass. The original film followed four first-generation Chinese American friends and the stories of their mothers, and the sequel will revisit the characters in the present day when they have had children of their own.

  • In Joy Luck Club 2, “the mothers become grandmothers and the daughters become mothers in their own right, introducing a new generation exploring their own relationships with culture, heritage, love, womanhood, and identity.”

  • The original cast is in talks to return to their roles, and as Variety points out, the expansion of their characters’ families will lead to a number of acting opportunities for Asian American actors.

‘38 at the Garden’ Tells the Powerful Story of Jeremy Lin and How He Not Only Transcended the Game, but Inspired the World —

  • It’s February 10, 2012, and filmmaker Frank Chi is leaving Washington, DC on a train headed to Madison Square Garden in hopes of scoring tickets to a Friday night New York Knicks game against the Los Angeles Lakers. But this wasn’t just any game. After standout performances against the Nets, Wizards, and Jazz, Linsanity was coming to a head and the late-Kobe Bryant was coming to the Mecca. 

  • Everyone knew it was a big game, even the scalpers. The cheapest tickets available were going for $700. Chi decided he’d watch the game at a karaoke bar instead in the neighboring Koreatown, surrounded by people who looked just like him. And together, they all witnessed one of their own, Jeremy Lin, an undrafted Asian American point guard that went from Harvard to the NBA, drop 38 points on the Lakers in an electric 92-85 victory. 

  • “Looking back at that experience, I don’t think I would have traded it for actually being at the Garden, if I’m being totally honest with you,” Chi says over Zoom. “I [was] surrounded by people who look like me, maybe a little older. Jeremy played out of his mind the whole game so we had two hours of people just losing it. People are crying, they’re running around, they’re screaming.  It’s unbelievable.I’m doing all of these things too, but I’m like what is this? Is this a cathartic reaction to seeing [someone] break the stereotypes we all deal with?”

  • A decade later, things have now come full circle for Chi, who is the director of 38 At The Garden that captures Lin’s incredible run in 2012 while playing on the Knicks. The film is a Mr. Fahrenheit and GTG Entertainment production and was spearheaded by GTG Entertainment Group’s founder Samir Hernandez, who produced the documentary alongside Academy-Award winner Travon Free.

  • The film, about a Korean American family that leaves the Bay Area for the rural expanses of Wyoming in the early days of lockdown, features Emerson Min as Benjamin Lee, a young boy struggling with the trauma of loss during the pandemic. 

  • Ken Jeong and Jae Suh Park play Isaac and Jenna Lee, Benjamin’s parents, each of whom has a different agendas for their move to Wyoming — Isaac has a new job, Jenna wants to ensure that Benjamin gets into the college of her choice. MeeWha Alana Lee plays Grandma Shim, Jenna’s mother, who has an important lesson to impart to her beloved grandson and a lifetime of memories to share with him before it’s too late. Miya Cech is Ellie Licht, Benjamin’s best friend and maybe more, a Chinese adoptee whose protective parents have shielded her from the darker sides of the world.

  • “Playing Dr. Ethan Choi on Chicago Med has been such a gift and a blessing. Lee Jung-jae to earn $700,000 per episode of ‘Squid Game 2,’ local reports say — Insiders have reportedly shared that “Squid Game” star Lee Jung-jae, 49, will receive 1 billion won (approximately $700,000) for each episode of the show’s second season.

  • On Tuesday, insiders reportedly said that “Squid Game” Season 2 will begin filming next year, with Lee signing a deal for 1 billion Korean won (approximately $700,000) per episode, local outlets reported.

  • If the hit Netflix show’s second season gets a nine-episode run like its first season did, Lee could potentially make 9 billion Korean won (approximately $6.3 million). “Squid Game” director Hwang Dong-hyuk is also expected to earn big, but insiders did not disclose the exact amount the Emmy Award-winning director may potentially receive. It was reported, however, that the upcoming season’s budget is estimated to be around 100 billion Korean won (approximately $70 million).

  • Following the news, both Netflix and “Squid Game” producer Cyron Pictures stated that the companies behind the series have not yet decided on Lee’s appearance fee per episode since “the script for ‘Squid Game 2’ is still in the process of being written.”

  • Constance Wu has opened up about the pain of being ostracized by the Asian community following her controversial 2019 tweets.

  • On Wednesday's episode of Facebook Watch's Red Table Talk, Wu said she felt betrayed by her own community after she tweeted her disappointment that Fresh Off the Boat had been renewed — pointing to one particular gala event, which took place months after her suicide attempt. At Character Media's annual Unforgettable Gala, host Simu Liu cracked a joke about her after she was assured that she wouldn't be mocked.

  • "They wanted me to come 'cause they wanted to celebrate [Fresh Off the Boat] and the kids on the show," Wu told co-hosts Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield-Norris. "At that time, there was so much controversy around me that I was like if I go, people are just gonna want to talk about the tweets. And like, I love my kids on the show so much. I want this to be a moment for them to celebrate."

  • While the Shang-Chi star offered a sincere apology, Wu admitted that she still feels shunned by the rest of her own community. "I feel like they are avoiding me," the Hustlers star said.   • Joined by journalist Lisa Ling and comedian Margaret Cho, Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle discussed the “toxic” stereotyping of Asian women on her podcast, “Archetypes.” 

  • In Markle’s latest podcast episode, “The Demystification of Dragon Lady,” she broke down the trope of the “dragon lady,” a term coined in the 1930s to describe East Asian women who were powerful, sexual and domineering. 

  • Markle opened the episode by recalling the diverse cultures she experienced while growing up in Los Angeles, noting that “the multitude of Asian cultures was a huge part of that.” “My weekends were spent in Little Tokyo or having iced teas in Thai Town, or sitting with my friend Christina Wong and her parents at a Chinese restaurant,” she said.

  • Markle went on to criticize films such as “Austin Powers” and “Kill Bill,” which she said presented caricatures of women of Asian descent as “oversexualized or aggressive.”

    “The dragon lady — the East Asian temptress whose mysterious foreign allure — is scripted as both tantalizing and deadly,” she noted. “This has seeped into a lot of our entertainment. But this toxic stereotyping of women of Asian descent, it doesn’t just end once the credits roll.”

  • Cho, who is also an LGBT social activist and musician from San Francisco, added that the “Dragon Lady” stems from the “fantasy of Orientalism.”

    “It’s actually a character that is similar to the femme fatale, in that a woman who is beautiful and deadly because we can’t just be beautiful, it has to come at a cost,” Cho said. “It’s kind of like evil queen adjacent, but it’s also pinned to this idea that Asian-ness is an inherent threat. That our foreignness is somehow going to get you. The mystery and the exoticism of it is part of it. And unfortunately, that trope has really stuck to film, but also to Asian American women or Asian women.”

  • The streamer has ordered a New York city-set spinoff of its Bling Empire series. Bling Empire: New York will follow a group of wealthy, sophisticated and hilarious Asian-Americans from New York City, where the quality of real estate is measured by address, not acreage.

  • These include Dorothy Wang, who was a cast member of Bling Empire season two.

  • The news comes ahead of the third season of Bling Empire, which launches on October 5.

  • The original Bling Empire series launched in 2021 and was set in Los Angeles. The second season launched in May 2022.

Jeff Yang speaks up about Constance Wu’s ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ harassment claims — Author and CNN Opinion columnist Jeff Yang has spoken out regarding actor Constance Wu’s claims of having experienced sexual harassment on the set of ABC’s hit series “Fresh Off the Boat.”

  • In a Twitter thread, Yang, whose son Hudson Yang played Eddie Huang in the American sitcom, expressed regret for not speaking out when Wu approached him with her allegations during the show’s production.

  • Yang initially distanced himself from Wu’s allegations on Sept. 24, tweeting: “I don’t want to talk about it, it’s not my place to comment and I have nothing to share.” Two days later, he explained that his initial tweet was made to address questions he had received regarding Wu’s new memoir, “Making a Scene.” He also said that she had since reached out to him.

  • Yang wrote that when Wu brought her concerns to his attention, he asked why she had not brought her concerns to the executive producers, to which she explained that she was not on speaking terms with one of them because he had harassed her in the past. This aligns with her recent claims that a senior producer, only identified in her memoir by the initial “M,” had been controlling her, telling her what to wear, demanding she send him selfies and touching her inappropriately.

Everyone Wanted to Make a Movie About the Thai Cave Rescue. Did Any of Them Get It Right? — After 12 boys and their soccer coach were saved from a flooded cave in northern Thailand in 2018, Hollywood descended. Many feared filmmakers would exploit and mishandle the story, but something else happened.

  • On June 23, 2018, twelve members of the Wild Boars, a youth soccer team based in the jungled mountains of northern Thailand, and their young assistant coach parked their bikes in the mouth of Tham Luang Cave after practice. The cave network was dry when they entered, but as they traveled more than a mile on foot into its dark, dank limestone recesses, a monsoon descended. It was the first major storm of the wet season, and it caught everyone on the ground by surprise. There was no time for officials to close the cave, and by the time they found the boys’ bikes, Tham Luang was already flooded.

  • The subsequent 18-day search and rescue operation was an unprecedented collaboration involving Thai government officials, Thai Navy SEALs, members of the U.S. Air Force, local farmers, Thai hydrologists and engineers, and, most famously of all, some of the world’s very best cave divers. The entire country of Thailand tuned into this story from day one. Although it appeared the boys were almost certainly dead, the nation held out hope. Once the boys were found alive, hundreds of reporters and thousands of volunteers from around the world joined the scrum outside the cave, and millions of people across the globe became invested in the boys’ fate. So it was exhilarating when, despite the stacked odds and the many ever-shifting perils, every last one of the Wild Boars was pulled out of the cave alive.

‘Quantum Leap’ reboot brings a rare Asian American lead to network television — “The show is about jumping into other people and having an experience that is maybe different than yours.”

  • When Raymond Lee first received an offer to star in “Quantum Leap,” a sequel to the beloved sci-fi series that aired from 1989 to 1993, he thought the show’s producers had made a mistake. Instead of a supporting character, he was being asked to play the lead.

  • “I got to play the lead in theater, [but] I didn’t know if the landscape was there for me to do it in television, let alone network television,” Lee told NBC Asian America. “But lo and behold, it presented itself, and I was like, ‘I have to take this swing.’ This is the role I’ve been waiting for.”

  • Set nearly three decades after Scott Bakula’s Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into a time-traveling machine and vanished, the new “Quantum Leap” on NBC stars Lee as Dr. Ben Song, a quantum physicist who discovers a way to travel through time and space and fix mistakes of the past by temporarily leaping into the bodies of other people.

  • The Canadian-born actor, who has dual Canadian and American citizenship, was appointed to the Order of Canada in June — the highest civilian honor of the country — in recognition of her accomplishments onstage and onscreen. 

  • On Sept. 15, the Emmy-nominated star was named as the official Canadian delegation for the queen’s funeral. Other notable figures in the procession included former Olympian Mark Tewksbury and musician Gregory Charles, among others.

Élodie Yung on Thony’s Criminal Descent in ‘The Cleaning Lady’ Season 2 — The second season of The Cleaning Lady premieres next week, and there is so much to unpack.

  • When we last left Thony (Élodie Yung), she was becoming business partners with Arman (Adan Canto) and Nadia (Eva De Dominici) after Hayak’s (Navid Negahban) downfall. After celebrating her newfound partnership and deciding to stay in the United States, Thony finds Marco has taken their son Luca. With Arman in prison still, Thony turns to FBI agent Garrett (Oliver Hudson) for help with her son. 

  • “It’s just all over the place,” Yung tells The Nerds of Color over the phone from the set. “She’s juggling so many plates even more than the beginning of this story we’re following because she has fallen into this underground world of Vegas crime.”

  • With everything going on with Thony and the world she’s involved in, she will be going through some changes mentally. There are some moments where Thony is completely emotionless and really showing no empathy. Yung wants it to be clear that Thony is not a sociopath. She’s just on “autopilot” as survival mode.

Lee Jung-Jae From “Squid Game” Just Broke Several Emmys Records By Winning, And It’s So Cool — He is the first Asian star to win Best Actor in a Drama Series AND the first actor from a non-English show to ever win at the Emmys.

  • History was made at the Emmys this year! Lee Jung-jae — who played the main character, Gi-hun — took home the trophy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series!

  • The 49-year-old became the first Asian actor to EVER win the prize in that category!

  • The other actors nominated for this category were Jason Bateman for Ozark, Brian Cox for Succession, Bob Odenkirk for Better Call Saul, Adam Scott for Severance, and Jeremy Strong for Succession.

  • "Thank you so much," he said during his acceptance speech. "First of all, I'd like to thank God above." "Thank you to the television academy, thank you to Netflix, thank you to director Hwang [Dong-hyuk] for making [a] realistic problem we all face come to life so creatively on the screen with a great script and amazing visuals."

Everything Everywhere Star Ke Huy Quan Joins Loki Season 2 — From one multiverse to another, Ke Huy Quan is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

  • The news comes via D23 Expo earlier this week, where Quan's casting in "Loki" season 2 was revealed as he joined the rest of the show's cast, including Tom Hiddleston, Sophia Di Martino, and Owen Wilson, on stage at the event.

  • The actor who played Short Round in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" didn't appear at the panel for the latest (and maybe last?) "Indiana Jones" film, which wrapped up shortly before Marvel took the stage. Instead, he made his entrance during the "Loki" portion of the event, reportedly joking that he ended up at the wrong panel. But his presence there was no accident, and his addition to the "Loki" cast is extremely exciting given the actor and stunt choreographer's complex history with Hollywood.

  • "When I was in my late teens and early twenties, I really wanted to pursue acting and there were just not a lot of opportunities for me. I remember reading a lot of scripts where the Asian character either didn't even have a name, or if they did, they would have two or three lines."

Lee Yoo-Mi becomes first Korean actor to win ‘Outstanding Guest Acting’ award at Creative Arts Emmys — The ceremony for the Creative Arts Emmys precedes the Primetime Emmys, scheduled this year on Sept. 12, and honors the artistic and technical achievements in TV production.

  • Lee took home the accolade for her performance in “Squid Game” as Ji-yeong, a young woman who was recently released from prison after killing her abusive stepfather. 

  • The 28-year-old gave her acceptance speech in Korean initially, saying, “Thank you so much for this huge honor. I want to give my thanks to the TV academy, especially a big thanks to my Netflix team as well.” She then added in English, “I’m so very happy, thank you!”

  • Other nominees for the category included Hope Davis (“Succession”), Marcia Gay Harden (“The Morning Show”), Martha Kelly (“Euphoria”), Sanaa Lathan (“Succession”) and Harriet Walter (“Succession”). 

‘Squid Game’s Lee Jung-jae Lands Male Lead In ‘Star Wars’ Series ‘The Acolyte’ From Leslye Headland And Lucasfilm — The eve of his potential historic night at the Emmys, Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae looks to have found his first major studio role following that breakout in a property more popular then the Netflix global phenomenon.

  • Sources tell Deadline that Lee has landed the male lead in the new Disney+ Star Wars series The Acolyte from Lucasfilm. Amandla Steinberg is set for the other lead role, with Deadline also recently breaking the news that Jodie Turner-Smith also is joining cast. Leslye Headland tapped as the series director, writer, exec producer and showrunner. Headland has been very hands-on with Lucasfilm execs including President Kathleen Kennedy in putting together a diverse, A-list ensemble, and with Steinberg, Turner-Smith and now Lee, it looks to be headed in that direction.

  • The Acolyte is a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging Dark Side powers in the final days of the High Republic era, Disney+ said in announcing the project in December 2020. In the real universe of Star Wars, “acolyte” can refer to individuals with Force abilities who learn from a more experienced Sith Lord.

  • Landing Lee for The Acolyte is quite the victory for Lucasfilm and Headland, given that every studio and streamer was looking to get into business with the Squid Game breakout star. It’s been a year since the Netflix series premiered, smashing streaming records, scoring 14 Emmy noms and turning Lee and his castmates into household names. He and Jung Ho-yeon will be presenters at the Emmys next week.

‘Partner Track’ Star Arden Cho Reflects on the Diversity in the Netflix Series: ‘We Just Dive In and We Get to Tell Our Stories’ — And it’s something that I’m so excited that the world finally sees the need for,” the actress tells TheWrap.

  • Netflix’s romantic dramedy series “Partner Track,” set at a Manhattan-based white-shoe law firm, has been described as “Sex and the City” meets “Suits,” but for star Arden Cho the series is unlike any other that she’s seen on television. That’s because the story centers on a first-generation Korean American merger and acquisitions lawyer, Ingrid Yun (Cho), as she navigates everything from forbidden romance to microaggressions at the male-dominated company — something Cho said is hard to come by in shows about single 20-something women in New York City.

  • “Ingrid just sticks out to begin with,” Cho told TheWrap. “She is an Asian American woman, and there is some diversity at the firm but it’s very clearly noted. You’ve just got, ‘Oh, we’ve got a couple of people of color. Let’s stick them together, and that’s your diversity,‘ which is something we see happening in the world. We’re sort of sprinkled in here and there, but I love that with ‘Partner Track,’ we just dive in and we get to tell our stories — our complex stories from our point of view — and it’s something that I’m so excited that the world finally sees the need for.”

  • What stands out for Cho is the show’s focus on an Asian American woman, touching on both issues of sexism and racism in the workplace.“A lot of these stories we’ve seen have been told from a perspective that only touches on sexist issues or something different, and I think for Ingrid and her friends and these characters, we really touch on so many different issues in our patriarchal society or in this world of Parsons Valentine,” Cho explained. “We get a little bit of the racism, the sexism, the microaggressions — really just the buffet of it all. And so, watching Ingrid navigate through all of this with her friends and make these choices, mistakes and wins is really fun and a journey.”

Turning anger into activism: What we learned from the stories told at this year’s Asian film festival — While spikes in hate crimes and violence against Asian Americans have emboldened activism in recent years, filmmakers and creatives have long been working to amplify Asian stories for decades.

  • In 1978, a group of grassroots activists organized the very first iteration of the Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF), the oldest and longest-running cinematic showcase of its kind. Throughout the years, the festival has debuted some of the most acclaimed directors of Asian descent, from Wayne Wang to Ang Lee, and showcased films from over 40 countries.

That’s so not fetch: Tina Fey’s allegedly ‘anti-Asian’ jokes go viral on TikTok — Tina Fey is facing backlash after a TikTok user uploaded videos showing instances where the actor-screenwriter made jokes targeting Asian people.

    A clip from a 2014 interview with Jimmy Fallon is shown in one of the videos, where Fey is heard talking about her then 2-year-old daughter’s newfound ability to talk. 

  • “She has a very specific way of talking, that I realized she kind of sounds like a prostitute in a Vietnam movie,” Fey says, drawing laughter from the audience. Fey then goes on to mock a Vietnamese accent, comparing her daughter’s speech to the lewd, stereotypical depictions of Vietnamese women on screen.

‘Rush Hour’ fans celebrate the franchise’s ‘healthy racism’ — Twitter users are commenting on jokes from the iconic “Rush Hour” film franchise after user @Lexisriches proclaimed that the sequels are “so racist.”

  • Over the weekend, Twitter user @Lexisriches wrote about the sequels, and what started as a single tweet opened up an alley down memory lane where many users pulled up some jokes from the buddy cop film franchise that have not aged well.

  • One of the scenes shared in @Lexisriches’ thread, which has over 26,000 likes, is the iconic Hong Kong spa fight scene where LAPD Detective Carter (Chris Tucker) accidentally punches Hong Kong Detective Lee (Jackie Chan) in the face during the scuffle and tells him, “All y’all look alike.”

    “This is what I call healthy racism just mocking each other’s cultures and having fun with differences,” the user who shared the clip wrote.

What Arden Cho Learned About Speaking Up: “I Was Taught Not to Rock the Boat — How the 'Teen Wolf' actress risked her career over her pay inequity dispute and found a role on the Netflix law firm drama 'Partner Track.'

  • About five years ago, Arden Cho started saying no to scripts. It began when her role as Kira Yukimura, the only woman of color in the main cast of MTV’s hit series Teen Wolf, was abruptly cut from the final season in 2016. She decided to hold out for the right next project — which meant finding characters that, as a Korean American who grew up in Texas, she thought she would never see. “I deserve, at least once in my life, to tell a story that girls can watch and be inspired by,” she tells THR. Her private “no’s” found a public stage this May, when she turned down Teen Wolf‘s film reboot; reports of the salary she was offered (apparently a fee less than half what her white co-stars earn) surfaced, and the story went viral. Cho said she based her decision not only on her career, “but for the next generation, the next Asian American girl, thinking this might be the best you can get.”

  • Cho was ready to wait decades for another gig, but an ideal role came quickly in the form of Ingrid Yun, a young woman gunning for a top job at a New York law firm on Partner Track, coming to Netflix on Aug. 26.   • How did it feel to work on a series led by an Asian American woman?

    It was nice to be able to have conversations [with showrunner Georgia Lee] about Ingrid as a woman of color. Even small things like who’s going to kiss first — it’s really special that it’s the woman choosing in this show. Whether Ingrid’s choices are right or wrong, she’s making them.

  • Can you describe what is special about your character?

    She’s not the typical shy, submissive Asian girl that people might expect. She’s quite bold. I think a lot of women in these cutthroat [corporate] worlds try to hide their feminine sides to earn respect, but if Ingrid wants to wear pink, she’ll wear pink.
